Environment, Health & Safety - Programs & Recognition

Provident participates in a number of programs that are aligned with our EH&S policy and objectives:

  • Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) - Environment, Health and Safety Stewardship Initiative - The CAPP Stewardship Initiative is committed to the continuous improvement and transparent reporting of environmental, health, safety and social performance. The initiative also helps member companies track and trend their environment, health, safety and social performance. Provident has participated in the program since inception, achieving Gold Level status in 2003, and Platinum level status in 2004.
  • Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) - Energy in Action -Piloted in September 2004, CAPP's Energy in Action program (which falls under its EH&S Stewardship Initiative) celebrates the upstream petroleum industry's commitment to stewardship principles through community-related activities. Under the program, industry and communities from across Canada unite to participate in educational and environmental renewal activities with the goal of building cooperative and sustained relationships. In 2005, Provident participated in the program by donating money and volunteer time toward beautifying the town of Lampman, Saskatchewan. In 2006, Provident will participate in a similar capacity in Oxbow, Saskatchewan.

  • Canadian Greenhouse Gas Challenge Registry (Formerly the Voluntary Challenge and Registry Inc.) - The Canadian Greenhouse Gas Challenge Registry is a non-profit partnership between industry and government that is aimed at providing a means to promote, assess and recognize the effectiveness of the voluntary approach to addressing climate change. In 2004, Provident was recognized for our greenhouse gas program, with a gold certificate, the registry's highest level of achievement.
  • Environmental Liability - As part of our operations planning, Provident conducted a detailed review of all our assets, and developed a plan to manage our environmental liability. We review our abandonment and reclamation program yearly to determine potential liabilities, and to assess whether our fund is adequate. In 2005, the Province of Alberta awarded Provident 46 reclamation certificates.
  • Internal Incentives - Provident insists that employees and contractors work safely and be sensitive to the environment at all times. Each year, our field offices host education, health and safety banquets to recognize individual staff for their contributions.
  • Emergency Response - Provident has a plan in place to respond to any emergency in an effective, timely manner. We conduct regular exercises and information sessions to ensure that emergency response plans remain current and appropriate.

And, Provident has recently been recognized with a number of EH&S awards:

  • Gas Processors Association of Canada (GPAC) Safety Award - On April 21, 2006, GPAC presented Provident's Empress Plant with this award for the seventh year in a row. The award recognizes the plant's achievement of 182,402 hours without a lost time incident.
  • CSX Chemical Safety Award - On March 23, 2006, Provident's Kinetic facilities in Sarnia, Ontario; Marysville, Michigan; and Lynchburg, Virginia were presented with the CSX Chemical Safety Award in recognition of their strong commitment to the safe movement of hazardous rail shipments. CSX Transportation, which operates the largest railroad in the eastern United States, handled approximately 1,700 carloads of product that originated from Provident's Kinetic facilities in 2005.
  • Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Stewardship Award - On April 13, 2006, Provident's Kinetic facilities in Taylor, British Columbia; Homeglen/Rimby, Alberta; and Sarnia, Ontario were presented with the BNSF Stewardship award, again, in recognition of our strong commitment to the safe movement of hazardous rail shipments. BNSF Railway operates one of the largest rail networks in North America.
  • CN Safe Handling Awards (2) - On May 15, 2006, CN presented 2005 Safe Handling Awards to Provident's Redwater facility and collectively to all of our Kinetic facilities. CN presents Safe Handling Awards each year to customers that load 100 or more tank cars per year with dangerous goods, and that maintain high standards for safe handling and shipment. To determine eligibility, CN monitors non-accident releases (NARs) for tank cars carrying dangerous goods. NAR is an industry term that refers to a tank car that has been found leaking, but that has not been involved in an accident.
