President & Chief Executive Officer

Tom Buchanan serves as president and chief executive officer of Provident Energy Trust and also a member of the Trust’s board of directors. In 1993, Tom established Founders Energy, a junior independent oil and gas company that was converted into Provident Energy Trust in 2001. At Founders, Tom held the positions of chief financial officer and executive vice president, as well as president and chief executive officer.

Tom has over two decades of experience in the oil and natural gas sector, and prior to creating Founders Energy, served in a number of financial management positions. His positions included: chief financial officer for Bankeno Resources (1988 to 1991); controller for North Canadian Oils Limited (NCO) (1986 to 1988); manager in the finance group at Merland Explorations (1983 to 1986) and a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse (1980 to 1982).

Tom is a director of Athabasca Oilsands Corp. and Churchill Energy Inc. He is also the chairman of Renfrew Educational Services, a not-for-profit educational organization for children with special needs and those who are typically developing, and the Edge School for Athletes, an educational facility that allows young people to pursue academic excellence while striving to reach their full athletic potential. He has also coached minor hockey for the Crowchild Hockey Association.

Born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Tom grew up in Calgary. He received his bachelor of commerce from the University of Calgary and later became a chartered accountant. Tom and his family reside in Calgary, Alberta.
